Gaia's Request

Gaia’s Request
She asks only to be loved in her changing time
as her ocean floors rise in mountainous ridges,
the plates of her land mass groaning apart,
her ice caps melting back into the sea,
adjusting to her changing place in the heavens
and the balancing needed for misguided man.
She wants a ceremony of simple devotion,
the churning human tide unaware, unconscious
though a few light fragile candles in the hurricane wind.
She rises wondering if we might greet her
before the engines start our machines turning;
so small within the mass we miss our importance,
how our gestures touch her, how a word of greeting
might ease her travail toward the birth
of a world yet unknown, waiting to be found
in our innermost hearts.
