Governor Cuomo believes that New York State is comprised of distinct regions that each enjoy unique economic strengths and face individual challenges.
Based on the simple truth that no one knows their regions better than the people who live and work there, the Governor created ten Regional Economic Development Councils earlier this year. Made up of local business, labor, education, and community leaders, these Regional Councils empowered each area of the state to set their own priorities for economic development.
Over the last several months, the Mohawk Valley Regional Council has worked to develop a comprehensive strategy to grow the economy in the Mohawk Valley. The plan also identifies priority projects that have the greatest potential to create jobs.
Today, Governor Cuomo announced historic investment in the Mohawk Valley to support this transformational plan.
The Governor is awarding the Mohawk Valley $60.2 million to support 59 priority projects.
Some of the innovative projects include:
- $15 million will construct a new SUNYIT – CNSE Computer Chip Integration and Commercializing Center, a cross-university partnership between SUNY Institute of Technology and the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany.
- $2 million will transform the former Tryuon juvenile detention into a business park, the Tryon Technology Park and Incubator Center, generating jobs and revenue.
- Over $3 million will create major private-public waterfront projects at key regional hubs such as Utica, Rome, Amsterdam and Frankfort.
- Nearly $1 million will fund new training and educational programs at Mohawk Valley’s academic institutions to boost the capacity and skills of the regional workforce.
